The Maturity Method

Concrete Maturity

Concrete maturity is the period when concrete hydration begins and mixes transition from the liquid to the solid stage.

The Maturity Method is based on the principle that concrete strength is directly related to its temperature during the curing process. Based on this principle, ASTM  C1074 emerged about 30 years ago.

Why is this Important?

Monitoring the maturity of fresh concrete is important for quality assurance and to meet regulations. In particular, the Maturity Method directly addresses some of the limitations for the in-place testing of concrete.

In the construction industry, in particular, the adoption of technology is happening at a much slower pace than any other industry. Thus, the  Maturity Method is not widely used because of the lack of awareness and the continued implementation of traditional methods that have been practiced for hundreds of years. Traditional testing is destructive, in most cases, expensive, and does not provide the essential concrete data to make informed decisions on-site.

In fact, traditional testing methods generate unnecessary costs and delays, and their applications can result in:

  • Longer construction waiting time: Construction delays are a huge problem in construction and especially in the concrete sector because once the concrete is placed and cured, the job is pretty much done.
